ROCKFORD (WIFR) A new state law that's in its early stages could make it illegal to drive and talk on your phone.

Police for a long time have been telling us how dangerous is to be distracted while we're driving, so lawmakers are now considering banning drivers from being able to hold their phones while behind the wheel.

State Congressman, Joe Sosnowski (R), who represents the state's 69th District, says it's a law that doesn't automatically solve the problem.

"It's really hard for police to enforce this type of law because of limited resources," said Sosnowski. "We can't have officers looking inside of every car at every intersection."

Sosnowski voted down the bill that, if it passes, will force drivers to use their phone's speakerphone or use other types of hands free devices. It's already illegal to drive while using your phone in school and construction zones in Rockford, but the new law would mean you can be ticketed on any road, at any time.

"You can always be distracted by your phone," said Rockford resident Bobby Howard. "If you can have your phone down, use your Bluetooth, keep your hands on the wheel, shouldn't be any problem."

The measure just made it's way through the Illinois House of Representatives. A similar bill was proposed last year, but never made it through the Illinois Senate. Sosnowski says he's not sure if it would pass this time around.
