ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Doctors at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center have a new way to help heart patients, without performing open heart surgery.
The new procedure is called TAVR, it allows surgeons to perform heart valve replacement with a small catheter. It's inserted through a small incision in the leg or between the ribs. Around 1.5-million people in the U.S. suffer from aortic stenosis, which is a narrowing of the heart valve opening. Doctors say TAVR allows them to treat high risk patients that they would have not been able to in the past.
OSF is one of about 200 hospitals performing this procedure nationwide.
