FREEPORT (WIFR) -It took months to get it ready but the Freeport Central Fire Station is now up and running in a new building. And today we got the chance to check it out.
The new Central Fire station is in the county's old Public Works building. It sat empty for close to eight years. But as you can see now it's filled with fire trucks and ambulances. The one point two million dollar construction project transforming the old building into a fire station was paid with ambulance fees, not general taxes. The fire house actually opened a few months ago but today was the first chance the public got to take a look inside.
"You can see by the truck bay here that we have ample size for multiple pieces of equipment. We've got room for a 30 seat classroom. We've got a conference room, we have a living area upstairs, and we’re also sharing part of the facility with the police department." Chief Jim Blackburn
During the open house firefighters also warned visitors about the dangers of kitchen fires as part of fire prevention week.
