Needle Found in Child's Candy

LOVES PARK (WIFR) -- It's a story we hear about every Halloween, but never think will happen in your own neighborhood.

A Stateline family had to call the cops after finding a needle in a piece of candy.

Jesse Washington is an officer himself. He took his daughter trick-or-treating around his loves park neighborhood. They only went about four blocks before coming home with a pretty good haul. Washington's wife started sorting through her daughter's bag... When she found a package of starbursts that looked like it had been tampered with. When she picked it up, she felt something sharp.

"I was shocked, shocked and outraged, because this is our own neighborhood. You think it’s a safe place to go and nothing like that would happen because the same kids you go trick or treating with are the same kids that go to school with your kids. I was really shocked."

Loves Park Police took the piece of candy as evidence and say they'll look into it. In the meantime, they say this is the perfect example of why it's important to check out all the candy our kids bring back.
