NAACP Upset with Campaign Newsletter

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Members of the NAACP are not happy with Congressman Bobby Schilling after their pictures were used in his campaign newsletter without their consent.

President of the Rockford branch, Lloyd Johnston says Congressman Schilling used pictures from an NAACP conference.

Johnston says all political candidates are welcome to their events, but since they’re a non-partisan organization, they don’t endorse any politicians. Norma Joseph is the State Conference Secretary for NAACP. She says she received several phone calls after the newsletter was released.

“This picture gives people the impression that I'm a supporter of his and that I'm working with him. and if they see my picture, well if Norma's supporting him then why not us? I don't support him, I have not supported him and I will not support him,” said Joseph.

We spoke to Schilling’s campaign and they say they stand by the pictures and in no way were trying to make it seem like the NAACP supported Schilling. In fact, they say Schilling is a member of the NAACP Chapter in Rock Island.
