ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- More Rockford kids are considered homeless than ever before.

At the end of January, the city took a count and classified more than 1,000 kids as homeless.

This is first time there have been more homeless kids than adults in Rockford.

The count showed a spike in homeless teens. And 22% of the kids were living in shelters or on the streets, which most likely means they're on their own.

Community Services Director Jennifer Jaeger says "When you don't know where you're going to sleep, it affects everything about your life. Everything from doing your homework to eating your meals to wondering where you're going to sleep when you get off the bus. So whatever you can do to help this kids is critical. "

Despite living such a tough lifestyle, 97% of homeless kids in Rockford still make it to school.

Build buildings for the homeless in Rockford? I think not! Rockford doesn't need anymore buildings built in it considering all the many vacant ones it already had! How about using one of them for the homeless families-let's try to use what we already have in our city before trying to use funds for other possibilities .

It's no wonder that Rockford is #9 on the most "miserable place to live" list. But I have a suggestion. How about our local leaders actually use the money that is collected by way of our tax dollars, to build the appropriate shelters needed? This city and state has such a high rate of fraud, waste and abuse in local, county, and state offices it's sickening. I'm paying taxes ino a school system that my children don't even go to. (I'm fortunate to be able I afford private schools). I jave no problem paying my property taxes, but I would much rather see those dollars allocated into a building fund rather than going to Rockford Public Daycare, ooops, I mean Rockford Public Schools.
