FREEPORT (WIFR) -- The Freeport Housing Authority [FHA] has been awarded $300,000 for additional energy efficient upgrades from The Efficient Living: Illinois Public Housing Authority Energy Program of the University of Illinois at the Urbana-Champaign Campus and the Illinois Office at the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). These grant funds are to implement Energy Cost Reduction Measures in the properties that FHA owns and manages.
This year’s funding from the Efficient Living Electric and Gas Grant Sub Awards will support the replacement of residential apartment lights, ballasts, fixtures and furnaces. These replacements are part of a larger scale HUD Energy Performance Contract [EPC] Demonstration Project that FHA is participating in and is being coordinated through the University of Illinois. The EPC Project looks to include water reduction replacement measures such as toilets, showerheads, and aerators.
This is the third year FHA has been awarded funds for energy efficient appliance upgrades. Previous funding has replaced eligible refrigerators 2001 or older, inefficient p-tac heating/cooling units, bathroom exhaust fans, and common area lighting throughout the FHA properties.
FHA is proud to receive this funding that makes a difference in using less energy resources and saves money for the residents and the agency. Recently FHA was also notified of it will receive 16 hours of HUD Green Technical Assistance to compile an Operations and Maintenance Manual and conduct Resident Outreach on energy efficient living. HUD’s new Affordable Green Initiative is offering technical assistance, training, and organizational accreditation to PHAs, CHDOs, local governmental entities, and other HUD-supported multifamily housing providers, owners, and property managers that have implemented or are seeking to implement energy management programs and green building and management practices. Each of these services is being offered at no cost to the recipient.
