ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Mid-West Family Broadcasting changes up the format at two of its ration stations in Rockford, and gets rid of five full time employees including two veteran radio broadcasters.
The company owns 5 local channels and switched formats on two of those channels on Friday. For listeners who enjoyed the news and talk on 100.5 NTA-FM, that format is gone, along with its newscaster Ken DeCoster and host Doug McDuff. The station’s General Manager Mike Paterson says the pair was let go on Friday along with three other full time station employees. NTA-FM re-launched at 3pm Friday as 100.5 River-FM and will play hits from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Also on Friday, 95.3 The Bull debuted as a new country station playing top artists including Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, and The Band Perry. Paterson says these changes have been in the works since September.
“I did not sleep well last night knowing that this was coming because people were involved. We work with people that make this business great, and that’s one of the things that sucks about making a business decision. It wasn’t something that was taken lightly but for our company to grow and evolve in this marketplace and really survive and thrive we had to make some structural changes," says General Manager Mike Paterson.
No other station changes are planned. DeCoster and McDuff have a combined 80 years of radio experience, 39 of those at NTA. Mid-west Family Broadcasting took over the former Maverick Media stations in April 2013.
Locally owned Mid-West Family Broadcasting, which owns and operates WRTB, WXRX, NTA , WGFB and WNTA 1330 announced today its making program changes to two of its local radio stations.
95.3 The Bull premieres as a country music station with Toby Keith’s “How Do You Like Me Now?” 95.3 The Bull will focus on country music and feature 20-Songs-In-A-Row throughout the day. Top artists on the station will include Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown, The Band Perry, and many others.
“Our goal by creating 95.3 The Bull is to give the country audience in the Stateline area their favorite songs with a new and fresh attitude that reflects the attitude of today’s country fan,” said Mike Paterson, General Manager / Shareholder for Mid-West Family Broadcasting in Rockford. “We’ll play the songs you love without the jibber-jabber that you don’t like. We’ll also be 100% focused on the local communities that make this area one of the best places in America to raise a family. We’ll support and produce local concerts, fairs, festivals, charities, and anything else that can help grow our region.”
At the same time, Mid-West Family Broadcasting also debuted “100.5 River-FM – Rockford’s Greatest Hits” playing the best pop hits of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. 100.5 River-FM debuted with “I Want You To Want Me” by local heroes Cheap Trick. 100.5 River-FM will feature artists including the Beatles, John Mellencamp, Journey, Elvis, the Commodores, and many more. 100.5 The River will also focus on the Rockford community with promotions and community events.
