ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A private security officer is expected to be okay after he was shot twice while on patrol at a Rockford apartment complex.
Rockford Police say they were called to Auburn Manor in the 4200 block of Auburn Street around 11:40pm Saturday. Police say the officer and a partner were doing their usual rounds when they spotted someone who's banned from the property. When they approached him, the man sped off. Investigators say a few minutes late, shots flew at the Metro Enforcement officers from the direction of some trees behind the complex. One street over from Auburn Manor, homeowners say their neighborhood is quiet though they have noticed that the complex has gotten worse.
"As a child I grew up here and I never had, we never had a problem,” recalls Rita Gurin of her time spent growing up in her grandmother’s house which backs up to Auburn Manor. “These streets are dangerous. Just pray, that’s what we do. That’s all we can do.”
Metro Enforcement says its officers will still patrol the property but is now looking into extra security measures. The head of Metro Enforcement says in the past, officers have been shot at but this is the first time one has been hit by gunfire. We’re told the officer is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
Police are looking for a black man in his mid-20's. They say he was wearing a black shirt and black pants.
