MetLife Foundation Awards $35,000 Grant to Northern Illinois Food Bank

GENEVA (WIFR) -– MetLife Foundation has announced a $35,000 grant to Northern Illinois Food Bank. The grant is part of MetLife Foundation’s Food Bank Initiative. The grant, one of thirteen awarded to communities across the country, will enable Northern Illinois Food Bank to provide more nutritious food to those facing hunger across northern Illinois.

“Promoting healthy and strong communities is a cornerstone of MetLife Foundation’s work,” said Dennis White, president and CEO of MetLife Foundation. “Food banks are often on the front lines in the fight against hunger and play a vital role in meeting basic needs and providing critical services for their communities’ most vulnerable residents, including children and older adults.”

Northern Illinois Food Bank provides food to more than 60,000 hungry neighbors each week through 700 partner feeding programs across 13 counties. Last year, the food bank provided the equivalent of 33 million meals to people in need. One in eight people faces hunger in northern Illinois.

“The need is great and growing,” said Pete Schaefer, president and CEO, Northern Illinois Food Bank. “We are extremely grateful to MetLife Foundation for this generous donation that will help us provide 210,000 meals to our hungry neighbors.”

Since 2008, MetLife Foundation has awarded more than $3 million to help combat hunger. This has included support for the Food Bank Initiative, Meals on Wheels programs and the MetLife Healthy Families Program at the New York Botanical Garden.
