Stateline Recognizes Mental Health Awareness Week

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – More than 60 million people nationwide are living with a mental illness and here at home, members of a local organization are trying to change our perception of the disorder.

Today a few dozen people gathered outside the Winnebago County Justice Center to share stories and talk about what we can do differently to help reduce the stigma against the mentally ill. Robin Garvey is president of the local branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI. She says a lot of it comes down to education.

“There’s so much misconception that’s been perpetuated by media and movies, and haunted houses at this time of year, all too often inaccurately portray people with mental illness as violent and dangerous, when the truth is that most people with mental illness are victims.

This is the first of many events happening across the Stateline to mark mental illness awareness week.
