SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A new memorial is planned in Springfield for people who were killed or wounded while fighting for their country.
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Military Order of the Purple Heart have signed an agreement to honor those veterans. The memorial will be placed alongside other Illinois war memorials at Oak Ridge Cemetery, which is the site of Abraham Lincoln's tomb.
The Order of the Purple Heart has agreed to raise money for the memorial, while the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency will take charge of the care and maintenance of the memorial.
Preservation Agency Director Amy Martin says her agency is glad to be involved because the men and women who've earned the Purple Heart deserve the deepest gratitude for the sacrifices they've made.
