WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- A Memorial Day tradition that's been going on for the last 120 years continues to honor the veterans buried at one cemetery in Winnebago County.
Families gathered on Sandy afternoon for a roll call of the honored dead at the Burritt Cemetery in Winnebago County. More than 70 men and women who served our country are buried there. Quite a few served in the Civil War, some as far back as the War of 1812.
"I think the barbeques and family time are good but I think remembering those that died for the country is very important. Giving up your life finally is the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and liberty," says Suzanne Crandall, one of the organizers of Sunday’s service.
The service also included a reading of the Gettysburg Address and a playing of Taps.
