McHenry County Coroner Investigating Death of Harvard Boy

HARVARD (WIFR) -- The McHenry County Coroner is investigating the death of a 12 year-old Harvard boy who fell out of a canoe in a retention pond.

It happened yesterday evening near 811 Apple Valley Road in Harvard.

A canoe carrying the 12 year-old and two others capsized, dumping them all in the water. The 12 year-old was initially seen flailing in the water, but he eventually went under.

Calls for help alerted a nearby uncle, who attempted to rescue the victim. Multiple fire and rescue units were also called to assist. The other two young men were able to get to shore.

A dive team found the victim's body in 15-20 feet of water, about 125 feet from the shore. They tried to revive him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Harvard Mercy Hospital.
