Mayoral Candidate Against Geo-Policing

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Rockford's geo-policing pilot program is scheduled to begin on January 1st, but the city's democratic mayoral candidate says voters should have another option.

Today Jim Hughes outlined his proposal to make the city safer. You may recall Mayor Morrissey wants to establish three separate police headquarters across the city. Hughes argues that is not fair to taxpayers. He says we should not have to pay for three leases that would extend well beyond the pilot program. He wants to build a new building at this site near state and Kilburn that would be able to accommodate everyone.

"I know Rockford police officers and former chiefs of police that think it's a silly idea to have three different buildings for our police department, and the simple thing of the matter is, it's three times the cost," says Hughes.

Rockford's mayoral election will be held on April 9th, 2013.
