Mayor Gaulrapp Hopes for Presidential Debate in Freeport

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- 153 years ago Abraham Lincoln and Incumbent State Senator Stephen Douglas held a famous debate in Freeport. It was part of the campaign for Illinois Senate.

Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp hopes to host a debate between Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama on the historic site.

Freeport has been the center of recent media attention because Sensata Technologies is located there. The plant will close at the end of the year and 170 jobs will head to China. The company is owned by Bain Capital, which was started by Romney in the mid-80's.

Governor Pat Quinn will be in Freeport on Thursday to meet with Sensata employees and to visit the site of the historic Lincoln Douglas Debate.
