ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A man who lives in the River-View neighborhood, was gunned down in his own driveway.
Neighbors who live along Nelson Blvd. say during the day it’s a peaceful street, prefect for enjoying the views of the Rock River.
“I live living by the river, no mosquitos. There’s a little activity that way and across the river, but this is the first time it’s gotten that close,” said neighbor Jay Bornbach.
While some spent Tuesday afternoon mowing their lawns, Rockford detectives were searching for more clues in the murder of 30-year-old Donmarquis Jackson. Jackson was shot several times in the driveway of the home he was renting, around 9 p.m. Monday night.
Nearby homeowners say the home has been plagued with problems even before Jackson moved in a few weeks ago. That’s why some say, once the sun goes down, they make sure to stay inside.
“The last few months we’ve hard gunfire but we didn’t know where it was coming from. We ducked down in here, we’re just too scared to look out the window,” said Sara Curry who recently moved to Nelson Blvd.
“There’s a lot of gang activity around here, but if you’re in the house at night, you’re not looking for it.”
Investigators haven’t said whether this murder was gang related, but whatever the motive, some neighbors are committed to staying in the neighborhood while others think moving might be a better option.
“I don’t want to live in fear. I don’t want to put that fear into my kids, but I want to live in a safe neighborhood.”
Jackson’s family members were in and out of the home all afternoon, but none of them wanted to comment on the investigation.
