WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County State's Attorney announced today that on February 27, 2013, 48-year-old Ricky Griggs after being previously been found guilty by jury trial the defendant was sentenced to twenty (20) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for Burglary, (Class 2 Felony) and six (6) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for Unlawful Use of a Credit Card (Class 4 Felony) by the Honorable Judge Rosemary Collins.
On December 6, 2011, the victim’s vehicle was burglarized in the parking lot of Anytime Fitness, located at 6957 Old Creek Rd., in Rockford, IL. The victim reported that his car window had been broken and several items were missing, including his wallet and a credit card. The victim called to cancel his credit card and learned that it had been used at a local gas station. The victim had not made this purchase. An officer went to the gas station and spoke with the clerk who handled the transaction. The clerk remembered the transaction and obtained the receipt. A surveillance video showing the defendant making a purchase was collected by a detective. The defendant was subsequently arrested when he returned to make further purchases.
Burglary is a Class 2 Felony. Unlawful Use of a Credit Card is a Class 4 Felony. A Class 4 Felony is punishable by 1-3 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections but due to prior convictions he is eligible for extended term sentencing 1-6 years. Class X sentencing applied due to prior convictions and is punishable by 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and 3 years mandatory supervised release. The sentences will run concurrently.
