ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Rockford Police say when the temperatures drop, so do the number of murders, but that’s not the case anymore.
There was another murder last night, that adds up to three in just the last eight days. It has a lot of people concerned we’re headed for another string of murders like we saw in July.
Rockford Police are searching for answers and a suspect after finding 30-year-old Felix Mbinga shot to death in a car around 1:15 Monday morning at 4th and Buckbee near the Broadway business district. It’s just a stone’s throw away from Eight-15 International Styles and Cuts. Owner Jason Beaks says he was shocked to hear a murder happened so close to his business.
“Usually we see a lot of panhandlers, bums walking around, but that’s it.”
Beaks and people who live in the area are on edge, worried Mbinga’s murder may lead to more shootings.
“We’re seeing violence escalate at a minimum. It’s getting to be worse. It’s scary, you get scared at night time.”
Police haven’t released a motive for Mbinga’s murder, but Jeffery Oliver believes many other crimes in the neighborhood revolve around drugs.
“Every time I go to McDonalds over there or anywhere somebody’s like you straight, what’s up, you straight? You good? I think a lot of it revolves around drugs,” said Oliver.
Regardless of the crime, Beaks says he’s worried about his customers’ safety.
The fact that I cut a lot of kids’ hair, I have a lot of women bringing their kids up, so yeah, it concerns me a lot.
Police do not have any suspects yet in this case and haven’t named suspects or made arrests in either of the two other recent murders.
Sometimes police will step up patrols in areas where there’s been a murder or a lot of crime, but Lt. Hoey says at this point there aren’t any plans to do that.
