WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announced today that Vernon L. Smith was found guilty of Armed Robbery after a jury trial in front of the Judge Truitt.
On December 7, 2011, a man boarded a Rockford City Bus in which Vernon Smith was also riding. When the man got off the bus Smith got off as well. As the man walked down E. State St. near Highland, Smith drew a gun and demanded the man to give him his money. The man who had withdrawn money from an ATM prior to boarding the bus complied with Smith’s demand. As Smith fled the scene the man called the police and a foot chase ensued. Smith fled along N. Prospect Street and officers retrieved the man’s discarded ATM card, over $400 in US currency as well as the firearm and bullets.
Armed Robbery is a Class X Felony with a sentencing range of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections however, because a firearm was used in the commission of the crime, the sentencing range is from 21-45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.
