UPDATE: A Rockford family is mourning the death of a man they say was shot to death while walking to work this morning.

"It woke me up and Robert was screaming call the police, call the police," Kimberly Martin, who lives near the murder scene, said.

That's the chaos Martin awoke to early this morning. She says it's the gunshots that woke her.

"I heard it at the corner right there because I knew it was close," she said.

Martin had no clue how close it actually was. When her husband ran outside He found a man dead in the street near the intersection of Mulberry and Miriam right outside their home. Rockford Police say Clifford Thomas, 56, was shot multiple times. Investigators are now looking for two people witnesses say they saw running from the scene.

"Am I frustrated over the shooting? Yes," James DeVoe, President of the West Gateway Coalition, said.

DeVoe also lives near where the victim was found and has a vested interest in his neighborhood. The West Gateway Coalition is a community group aimed at rebuilding the west side through outreach programs and a strong neighborhood watch group. He says the neighborhood has come a long way from being overrun by drugs and gangs.

"We're changing it big time, and we're strong, but we've got to get everyone on board," DeVoe, said.

DeVoe says this morning's murder is a setback, but hopes it encourages more of his neighbors to get involved with the coalition to improve the area.

“It's people that change the neighborhood. We've got to gain the strength from those people and get them out and get them active and get them interested in changing the environment they live in," he said.

Again, Rockford Police are looking for two people who were seen running from the area where Thomas was shot.
