FREEPORT (WIFR) -- An unfortunate turn of events for a Freeport man who worked hard to recently move out of a homeless shelter. He was killed over the weekend and his daughter was caught in the crossfire.

Scott Lewis says he's still in shock after learning his friend and colleague was shot and killed Sunday night in Freeport.
“He was from Englewood which was a very gang infested area and when he came out here he wanted a better way of life, and so for him to come here and lose his life, that's tragic,” Freeport Area Church Cooperative Homeless Shelter Director Scott Lewis, said.

Friends identify the victim as Tim, but the coroner hasn't officially released his name. Police say the 50 year old man was on a porch in the 700 block of South Liberty when he and his 9 year old daughter were gunned down for no apparent reason.
“Good guy you know, he didn't bother nobody, you know he was just an innocent bystander that got killed,” Calvin Jones, a friend of the victim, said.
“He had no beef with people on the street. He had to have been just an innocent bystander,” Lewis said.

Lewis says Tim lived on the block for about a year and a half. He started as a resident of this homeless shelter, just two doors down from where he was shot. Within weeks of living at the shelter he was hired to manage the home. Lewis says Tim recently moved out of the shelter and was excited to start his new life with his daughter.

“He couldn't wait to have her here for the summer and move into his own place and have her is just, it was terrific for him," Lewis said.

Police say the girl is doing well. An autopsy for her father is scheduled for tomorrow.

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- A little girl is shot and her father killed on Freeport's southeast side.

Freeport Mayor Jim Gitz says the father and daughter were innocent bystanders who did nothing to provoke the shooting.

It happened last night around 10:30 at a house in the 700 block of S. Liberty Avenue. Police say the 50-year-old man and his 9-year-old daughter were each shot once. The girl is expected to be okay. The man worked at the Freeport Area Church Cooperative's Homeless Shelter, just two doors down from where the shooting happened.

The group;s leaders call the murder tragic and say he moved to Freeport to get away from gangs and violence in Chicago.

"When he came out here, he wanted a better way of life and so for him, to come here and lose his life, that's just tragic," said Scott Lewis with the Freeport Area Church Cooperative.

Police haven't released the man's name yet. An autopsy is set for tomorrow.

Lewis tells us the man worked at the Homeless Shelter but also started as a resident there. We're told he came here about a year and a half ago and said the man was such a good worker, within a few weeks, he was hired to help at the shelter. Lewis said he just recently moved out of the shelter into his own place.
