AMBOY, Ill. (AP) -- A northern Illinois jury convicted a man of murder and home invasion in the slaying of a 79-year-old Amboy man.
Lee County jurors took an hour to return the verdict against Matthew Welling on Monday. He was charged in the 2012 death of Leroy Daniels, who was slashed, stabbed and beaten.
The (Dixon) Telegraph reports Welling faces between 26 and 189 years in prison when he's sentenced on June 25.
Prosecutors say the 33-year-old was arrested after police discovered his ID and an engraved vial of his brother's ashes next to Leroy's body, along with other DNA evidence.
Amboy is located about 40 miles southwest of Rockford.
