UPDATE: OGLE COUNTY (WIFR) -- A Rochelle man will spend the next six months in jail for hitting and killing a motorcyclist while driving under the influence of drugs.
42-year-old Erik Steffins must also go through substance abuse treatment.
Back in June 2013, 21-year-old Caleb Holder was driving a motorcycle near Lakeview Drive and Illinois Route 251 when he was rear-ended and thrown from the motorcycle.
OGLE COUNTY (WIFR) – Police believe they’ve arrested the man who left a motorcyclist to die on a busy Stateline road nearly 5 months ago.
Caleb Holder’s life came to an end too soon. He was 21 years old and had just proposed to his girlfriend the day before he was killed. Caleb was hit on his motorcycle June 19th, on route 251 near Lakeview Drive.
“He’s the first thing I think about every morning, he’s what I think about all day long.”
The pain hasn’t gotten any easier for Caleb’s mother, even after Friday’s arrest of Erik Steffins. Steffins is charged with aggravated reckless driving, in Caleb’s death.
“I will never back down on getting justice for my son,” said Ronda Holder, Caleb’s mother.
Holder says she will never forget the last words he said to her.
“I love you, be good. And he said ‘I love you too, mamma.’”
Caleb left behind his mom, dad, a brother and his fiancé. Caleb and the man charged in his death, 41-year-old Erik Steffins had worked together. The Ogle County State’s attorney says Steffins had marijuana in his system the night of the crash. He’s currently out on bond.
The Ogle County State’s Attorney, Mike Rock says the aggravated reckless driving charge is the most appropriate charge for the evidence they have. The family would like to see more charges and believe this was intentional because the two had been arguing weeks leading up to the crash.
