UPDATE: BELVIDERE (WIFR) – A Machesney Park man accused of beating his girlfriend’s baby last summer has been found guilty of the crime.

23-year-old Dylan Abbott was found guilty of aggravated battery of a child after he was accused of beating his girlfriend’s 7-month-old baby while she was running an errand.

Abbott showed no emotion after the verdict was read. The family of the baby embraced each other and were noticeably relieved. The child’s mother, Kara Turek, says she left the couple’s apartment in Belvidere to get cigarettes while Abbott watched her son. She says when she returned, her child wasn’t breathing.

Boone County State’s Attorney Michelle Courier hopes this case sends a message to child abusers.

“We're very pleased with the conviction in this case. I hope it sends a message to those who abuse children that we take it very seriously and there will be consequences for their actions. We're very pleased to bring justice to those who can't speak for themselves,” says Courier.

The family says they feel like justice was served.

Abbott faces up to 30 years in prison for the crime. His sentencing is scheduled for February 17th.

BELVIDERE (WIFR) – The trial has begun for a Machesney Park man accused of beating his girlfriend’s baby last summer, leaving the infant with permanent brain damage.

The child’s mother says 23-year-old Dylan Abbott was frantic and panicking when the 7-month-old was found unresponsive.

Opening arguments were waived today and the first witness to take this stand was the child’s mother, Kara Turek.

Turek says she left the couple’s apartment in Belvidere and went to the liquor store to get cigarettes. She says Abbott stayed at home with the baby while she was gone. Turek says when she returned, her child wasn’t breathing. Abbott claims the baby was hurt from choking on a piece of candy, but Turek says his claim doesn’t add up.

“He was completely, pretty much paralyzed and wasn’t breathing and was practically dead. So I didn’t see how choking on a piece of candy would do that to my son,” says Turek.

Police say the baby suffered a critical head injury from the incident. Abbott maintains his innocence.

Abbott faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. He also faces additional charges of assault because police say the baby has permanent brain damage.

Abbott will be back in court October 6, 2014. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
