Local Police Raise Money for REACT Helicopter Crash Victims' Families

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- One of three first responders killed in a helicopter crash this past week is laid to rest. Jim Dillow was remembered during a service in Shannon this morning following Friday's multi-city memorial. Here, in Rockford, a local union is reaching out to the families of the victims.

Rockford police officers collected donations today at Target on East State Street. the department raised more than $600, which will go to the families of REACT crew members Jim Dillow, Karen Hollis and pilot Andy Olsen,. All three died Monday night in a tragic helicopter crash, just south of Rochelle. Rockford police say they felt the need to help other first responders knowing their jobs are not easy.

Terry Peterson, Rockford Police, says, "Their out there serving people on a daily basis. I mean, they do a community outreach like no other. Most people don't look at their positions as being dangerous. They don't look at them as putting their lives on the line. Until a tragedy like this happens and they realize there is a risk in what they do.”
