ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- About 10,000 patients search the Be the Match registry every year looking for marrow cell donors. That's why some local organizations are trying to get more people to sign up.
The Rock River Valley Blood Center and the Livestrong Foundation teamed up at the YMCA in Rockford today to get more people to register for be the match. Only 30 percent of patients actually find a marrow match in a family member. That's why volunteers say it's important to help if you can.
Taylor Seemuth, Be the Match recruiter, says, "These patients who are searching the registry have Leukemia, Lymphoma, Sickle Cell Disease but overall there are 70 plus conditions that can be treated and even cured with a marrow cell transplant and so in joining the registry you could truly save someone's life.
