ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Members of one Rockford church organize a day of service they’re calling “Good Neighbor Sunday” to lend a helping hand around the community.
Volunteers from Our Savior's Lutheran Church partnered with Johnson Elementary School to do some landscaping work around the building. More than 150 volunteers took part in service projects in and around the church, including cleaning up around Aldeen Park and filling backpacks with school supplies for local students. One group wrote cards to local service members while others packed up 16,000 meals to send to hungry families overseas.
“We really wanted to show we are a welcoming congregation, a welcoming church and people can serve alongside us and we wanted people to see every little bit makes a difference, every book that you donate or every yard that you rake makes an impact, "says church member Tiffany Wogsland.
“I liked it, there was everybody at the park cleaning up everything and it was incredible," says Nick Schanstra.
Church members say they've been planning this project for almost a year and they hope to make “Good Neighbor Sunday” an annual service event.
