FREEPORT (WIFR) -- There's quite a few big hearts out in the pretzel city today. The Freeport Mennonite Church is spending the next three days canning food for the less fortunate.
This year, the goal is to can 25,000 pounds of turkey. The church was able to buy all the meat and supplies thanks to donations collected last month. Once the canning is all said and done, the meat will go to the Mennonite Central Committee which will distribute quite a bit of it throughout the area.
"Just the outreach of the amount of people that it's touching, I felt to be involved in something so widespread just is a great, rewarding venture,” said volunteer Jackie Warner.
The Gospel Outreach Pantry in Freeport and the Rockford Rescue Mission have both received donations in the past.
