JANESVILLE (WIFR) – A Janesville church is taking its message outside. They’re building a 60-foot cross and they’re doing it in a week’s time. Church leaders plan to do more than minister with their new addition.
Deacon Wayne Korsberg isn’t just serving his church on Sundays, he’s been working all week to help build a new 60-foot cross on his church lawn. As a member of New Assembly of God, Korsberg is one of 21 volunteers working on the $60,000 project.
“It's just an exciting thing, we've had a number of the vendors, that we've used, it's just been amazing to see them step up and offer their services,” said Korsberg.
The church raised funds for the cross in just 2 months. Pastor Michael Jackson believes this could even be an economic boost for the area.
“Its got a great deal of local buy-in. We see it ultimately as something people will want to come and see, they'll want to see the new life cross in Janesville,” said Pastor Jackson.
This is just phase one. Church leaders plan to build a small pavilion around the structure for weddings and outdoor community events.
The cross is expected to be completed by Friday. Community members will have to wait a little longer for the pavilion as that construction won’t begin for a few more months.
New Life didn’t need a permit to build the cross. They’re protected under a federal law which allows the religious exercise of churches.
