Local Catholic Churches Come Out Against Same-Sex Marriage Bill

The debate in Springfield has made its way into Catholic Churches. Today, pastors were asked by Bishop David Malloy to read statements against legalizing gay marriage.

"We should pray that as Catholics we don't come off as gay bashers. I think as Catholics we know our bishops say they are our sons and daughters."

This is an except from the mass at Saint Edward's Church in Rockford. In the statement, Malloy said the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act "is not a political or a policy question, but a fundamental statement about society itself." Saying "marriage is an exclusive commitment between a man and a woman."

Malloy is asking local Catholics to contact lawmakers on the issue.
