FREEPORT (WIFR) – Freeport boasts one of the best air rifle teams in the united States. They have been training hard to try again to place in the top ten at the national level this year.

The Freeport High School Navy Junior ROTC Air Rifle Team hosted a tournament to start this season’s competition. They made it all the way to finals last year, placing 9th overall in the country and they’re looking to improve this year. The school’s teachers say they’re happy students are competing at a high level, while at the same time learning valuable life skills.

"One of the things that's really missing in today's society is that good self discipline. that's what I like about this sport... it teaches self-discipline. It teaches accuracy... and it teaches safety,” said Sgt. Maj. Michael Dechy, a Freeport H.S. NJORTC teacher.

The team has a long season ahead of them. Most high school sports only last a few months. The air rifle team’s season could go as long as 11 months if they keep winning.
