ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- We might want to be even more careful with what information we are uploading to Facebook. That's because it's one of the easiest ways for someone to steal our identity.
The U.S Postal Service says scammers could be using our profiles to gain information about us. The agency wants to draw more attention to identity theft, especially lottery schemes. That's when suspects claim we won something, then ask us to pay for shipping fees to get our credit card information. Officers say it's hard to track thieves down considering not every victim reports a scam.
"Scams are always successful when they're tied to emotion. So a lottery scam, you know who wants to be a big winner, well who doesn't want to be a big winner, everyone does. So it ties to emotion. If somebody is out of a job and they take the opportunity for a work at home scam, because they need the money to survive and they're looking for work," said Tom Brady.
The Rockford Police Department has a special unit to investigate these scams, so they are working on this case.
