ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Some area leaders are raising awareness about child neglect by simply holding onto a ribbon.

For the 13th annual Hands Around the Courthouse event, people held on to a ribbon around the criminal justice center. More than 100 kids were killed in Illinois last year due to child abuse, with numbers rising in Winnebago County.

Judge Rosemary Collins says it takes a community to start helping to prevent child abuse.

"We want people to know that there are agencies out there who are helping people who are involved in abusive situations and we want the community to understand also that we will not tolerate child abuse in our area,” said Judge Collins.

April is National Child Abuse and Prevention Awareness month.
