Right now Illinois lawmakers are trying to persuade Governor Pat Quinn to sign a gambling expansion bill, but it could mean Rockford wouldn't get a casino.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Illinois lawmakers may not be able to expand state gambling like they had hoped. Governor Pat Quinn says he only supports a casino in Chicago.

"The people of Illinois do not want an excessive gambling bill that's top heavy," says Governor Quinn.

That's why legislators are now looking at ways to scale back, so Quinn won't veto the bill.

"The scaling back just might mean the number of slots that might be allowed at the different facilities or the horse track; they could scale back on the number of positions they're talking about at each facility," says local state Senator Dave Syverson.

The current bill would mean five new casinos, including one in Rockford. It would also add slot machines to existing casinos and to horse racing tracks.

"Proceeds from the gaming (in Rockford) will be used for economic development," explains Syverson.

Quinn says, "My number one priority is economic growth and jobs."

But that shared sentiment may not be enough. Those are things lawmakers will discuss as they head back to Springfield on June 22 for a special session.

A decision on the gambling bill is expected to take about two weeks.
