Katrina Smith Remember on Her Birthday

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The search for a missing Machesney Park woman kept the Stateline on edge last Fall, until her body was found in the Rock River. On Tuesday night family and friends of Katrina Smith came together to make sure she's not forgotten.

Tuesday evening they released yellow balloons in Schoonmaker Park to celebrate what would have been Katrina's 31st birthday.

You make recall she went missing last October after a night of shopping and her car was found near the park where search parties gathered hoping to find her alive.

Katrina's sister, Miraynda Castro, has set up a memorial website, called SissysFootprintsFoundation.com to help others who've lost a loved one.

"People can go and talk to one another and kind of give support to people who have lost somebody. With that I also hope to raise money and with the money raised I hope to donate it to a local grief counseling organization," Castro said.

Katrina's husband, Todd Smith, has been charged with her death. He has plead not guilty. He'll be back in court on July 29.
