LOVES PARK (WIFR) — From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, the Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Spring Clothing Drive will take place at all 10 Rockford area Schnucks parking lots and Belvidere Township Building. Based on last year’s results, more than 1200 families are expected to drive up and drop off contributions.
“We look forward to helping residents keep items that can be re-used or repurposed out of our landfills,” said Lori Gummow, executive director of Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful. Three times a year about 120 volunteers help donors unload such items as men’s, women’s and children’s clothing – in any condition – including shoes, hats, belts, purses, soft-sided luggage, throw rugs, linens, stuffed toys and bedding. “To make it easier to process and transport, we ask that everything be brought in plastic bags,” Gummow added.
An environmental education and preservation organization, Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful holds their clothing drive the second Saturdays of May, July and October. In a partnership with event sponsor CTC Supplies of Milwaukee, the donations are resorted and redistributed throughout the continent and overseas, or recycled into rags, carpet padding and similar items. Event support is also provided by Schnucks, Belvidere Township, Coca-Cola and media partners The Rock River Times and 23 WIFR/Gray Television.
