ROCKFORD (WIFR) — Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Recycle Centers in Rockford and Roscoe will accept new children’s gym shoes as a community drop-off site for Annie’s Locker Share A Pair campaign. Children’s sizes 12- 4 gym shoes can be dropped off at 4665 Hydraulic Road Rockford and 13125 N. 2nd Street, Roscoe, from 9 a.m.- Noon Saturdays August 23, 30, September 6 and 13. The Rockford site is also open from 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays, accepting the athletic shoes August 26, September 2, 9 and 16.
“We’re excited to partner with Annie’s Locker, Youth Service Network and the International Day of Peace for this worthy effort to help equip students who don’t have the proper gym shoes,” Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Executive Director Lori Gummow said. “Our two Recycle Centers are open Saturday mornings and, at Rockford, Tuesday afternoons, for individuals and families to drop off new shoes to help students participate in exercise programs,” Gummow said.
As noted on the website annieslocker.org/share-a-pair-shoe-drive, the Share a Pair campaign goal is to collect 900 pairs of athletic footwear for needy students in Rockford. Prior to distribution to students, the donated shoes will be part of the “Walk in Other’s Shoes” labyrinth, which will be constructed to celebrate International Peace Day.
Volunteers staff each of the Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Recycle Centers year-round. The Rockford Recycle Center began opening on Tuesday afternoons in August, its 11th month of operation.
