MORRISON, Ill. (AP) -- A northern Illinois judge has denied a request to dismiss charges against a man accused of killing eight people in two states.

The Quad City Times reports the judge denied the request Friday from Nicholas Sheley, who filed a hand-written motion asking to dismiss charges accusing him of killing Russell Reed. Sheley claimed prosecutors failed to give him a speedy trial.

That means the trial against Sheley will go on with jury selection scheduled to begin Oct. 22 in Whiteside County. Testimony is to begin Oct. 29.

In this trial, Sheley has pleaded not guilty in the June 2008 slaying of the 93-year-old Reed of Sterling. He's already been convicted in the murder of a 65-year-old Galesburg man, and he faces trials in the deaths of six others.
