Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office Warns Public of Mail Scam

JO DAVIESS COUNTY (WIFR) -- The Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office would like to warn the public about a mail scam.

On January 23, the Sheriff''s Office received a complaint about a possible mail scam. The envelope that the citizen received in the mail states "Secured Document 2013" and "2013 Tax Information Enclosed". The enclosed form is titled "Notice of Tax Lien Investigation" and has the appearance of a document from the IRS claiming that the recipient has a tax lien against property for a large amount.

The form goes on to instruct the recipient to call a toll free number to discuss a settlement.

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office says this mailing is fraudulent and should be discarded. If you receive this mailing, you are urged not to call the listed phone number.
