Jewelry Store Owner Found Justified in Deadly Shooting During Armed Robbery

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford jewelry store owner who shot and killed a man trying to rob his store at gunpoint is cleared of any wrongdoing.

Bruce Swartz, the owner of Jewelry Concepts found out about a month ago the Winnebago County State's Attorney decided not to charge him for Brandon Pierce's death.

On November 30, 2012 Brandon Pierce came into the store in the North Towne Mall, asked about a ring, then showed what appeared to be a real gun. Swartz then shot Pierce four times. Pierce’s gun turned out to be a pellet gun.

"He reasonably believed that he, others in the store, were facing deadly force and under Illinois law the use of deadly force to protect yourself and others would be proper and therefore there will be no charges issued or considered in the future," Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato, said.

We reached out to Swartz to comment on the State's Attorney's decision, but he didn't return our calls.
