Janesville Performing Arts Center Constructs Black Box Theatre

JANESVILLE (WIFR) -- The Janesville Performing Arts Center (JPAC) will finish construction of a new performance space entitled “The Gallery” within the next month.

The new performance space will be a black box theatre, a transformable performance space that can be used for multiple purposes: meetings, events, parties, small theatre performances, children’s performances and small recitals. The space will seat approximately 100-200 people, depending on the configuration of the particular performance or event. The Gallery will serve a smaller, more intimate, performance space that allows audiences to fully embrace the staging, characters, costumes and true story of the production.

The Gallery will be located in the right-hand side of the lobby area, separated by newly constructed double glass doors. The space will be completely transformable and adaptable depending on the use. During large productions held in The Theatre (the upstairs main stage auditorium), The Gallery will convert into a usable large lobby space to accommodate large audiences.

The features of the new performance space include a large projection screen for meetings and events, pipe and drape curtain to blackout windows and walls, double glass doors to enter the space, and full theatre sound and lighting.

“I'm so excited to see this project come to life,” says Brett Frazier, JPAC Board President. “As an actor myself, I've always loved the intimacy of black box theatres. There's something magical about actor and audience being so close together and I can't wait for Janesville audiences to experience shows in our new space.”

The Gallery will have a soft-opening on Friday, August 23rd at 5:30pm with a memorial piano dedication to Dennis Vechinsky, a local performer and arts advocate that recently passed away. The Vechinsky family donated Dennis’s personal baby grand piano to use in the space. This dedication and short performance is open to the general public and includes light refreshments.

The next two performances held in The Gallery will be:

Sunday, September 22nd at 2pm- Culver’s Family Series- Bubble Wonder Show
October 10th-20th- Stage One, Inc- Speed the Plow

“The addition of a smaller performance space is something that JPAC’s resident groups have been asking for for quite awhile,” comments Elizabeth Horvath, JPAC Executive Director. “I am so pleased that the Board and local supporters were able to make the request into a reality. Resident groups will now have the opportunity to diversify their performances while also giving JPAC a secondary space for more children’s programming and other events.”

The Gallery will be open to outside renters, including performers, groups, businesses and other events. Price on rental will vary based on the type of event. Please contact Elizabeth Horvath, Executive Director, for more information on rentals.

The Janesville Performing Arts Center serves the greater Rock County area through performances and events produced by 15 local non-profit arts groups. The center’s 633 seat theatre, lobby, art gallery, box office, and administrative office are located in the historic Janesville High School/Marshall Junior High School building in downtown Janesville.
