JANESVILLE (WIFR) – Just after 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8th, Officer Benji Thompson observed the driver of a red Chevrolet Beretta fail to stop for a red traffic signal at E. Centerway St. and N. Parker Dr. He stopped the driver for the signal violation, during which he noticed a strong odor of intoxicants on his breath, and slurred speech. The driver was identified as 29-year-old Peter C. Smith of Janesville.
Officer Thompson requested a backup officer for standardized field sobriety testing. When the officers approached the suspect vehicle, Smith sped off from the traffic stop location. Officers pursued for a short distance at speeds of 50 mph until Smith pulled over on Harding St. just north of Hyatt St.
Smith was taken into custody on charges of fleeing/eluding an officer and OWI 8th offense. His blood alcohol tested at .15. Smith is being held at the Rock County Jail on felony OWI charges, felony fleeing, and a probation hold.
