ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Sports fans in Rockford have a new team to root for; one that pays tribute to arguably the city’s most famous sports team, the Rockford Peaches.
On Saturday, the Rockford Starfires were introduced to the public. The all women's hardball team will play at Beyer Stadium, former home of the Rockford Peaches. A star fire is a type of peach, so it's a fitting tribute to the original team from Rockford that played between 1943 and 1954. Fifteen players will take the field for the first time at Marinelli Field on Saturday, May 18. They'll play at Beyer once it’s ready to host games, on August 3rd. Players say they're ready to play ball.
"I've had a love for baseball since I was five, and I thought I was never going to get to play again until this league was introduced,” says Starfires pitcher Beth Layng. “It was a huge honor to be able to play, and it's going to be pretty amazing especially to have Helen and Bobbi and some of the original other Peaches, it’s going to make it all the more real.”
Beyer field will host an eight team hardball tournament over Labor Day weekend. Teams are coming from Chicago, Indiana, even Australia.
