Community “Can-Struction” Project to Benefit The Salvation Army Food Pantry

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Salvation Army food pantry will be the recipient of canned foods through a new and creative community project called “Wright Out of the Box’s Can-Struction.” For its inaugural launch, local architects will work with private and public school students, community volunteers and service groups to construct the Ameri-Can flag completely out of canned foods to be displayed during the month of May at CherryVale Mall in center court. Can-Struction sculptures have been erected in other communities, but this is the first time in Rockford. This project is the brainchild of a newly formed community partnership initiative called “Wright Out of the Box” that was created by Rockford Lutheran Schools to get businesses, non-profits, schools, manufacturing and tourist spots in the Rockford area to come together in partnership to showcase our great city. Major Randy Hellstrom, Winnebago County Coordinator for The Salvation Army states that, “This new initiative is exciting for the community and being designated as the recipient agency of the canned food is much appreciated. It will help support our year-round food pantry that provides services monthly to those in need.”

Canned Foods Needed

Throughout the United States, Can-Struction sculptures have been created to promote the arts and human service organizations. For Rockford’s first project an American flag will be constructed out of red, white, blue, yellow and green labeled canned foods. Specific types of cans are needed for the footprint of the design and the following lists of foods are being requested:
Progresso Soups - 18.5 oz cans
Chunk Light Tuna – 5 oz cans
Swanson Chicken Breast in cans – 4.5 oz cans
Goya or La Costena vegetables (various styles) – 11 oz cans
La Costena whole pinto beans – 19.75 oz cans
Various Products (ie: Rolland water chestnuts) – 5 oz cans
15 oz cans will also work – but we’d need less of these
Donations can be taken to CherryVale Mall center court and be placed in designated barrels marked “Watch what we CAN do in the month of May” beginning April 22 through May 7.
