Illinois YouthBuild Coalition Seeking VISTA Volunteer

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Illinois YouthBuild Coalition, Inc. is seeking candidates for one (1) VISTA volunteer position to begin in late July, 2013. Qualifications for the VISTA positions include: Age 18 or older, U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status, abachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, or business or 3 years experience working with at-risk youth/difficult-to-serve populations; strong organizational skills; excellent oral & written communication skills; computer skills; ability to work as part of a team and possession of a valid driver’s license.

In YouthBuild programs low-income young people ages 16 to 24 enroll full-time for about a year, during which time they build affordable housing for homeless and low-income people and work toward their own high school diploma or GED while learning leadership skills and internalizing the ethic of service. These programs are run by autonomous local community-based or public agencies. The Illinois YouthBuild State Coalition Resource Developer will assist state coalitions to build partnerships with public and private organizations that support the goals of YouthBuild statewide to enroll maximum numbers of low-income youth and court-involved youth. This position will also manage the communication and distribution of information and resources among the members of the Coalition statewide. There are currently 16 YouthBuild programs in Illinois.

AmeriCorps VISTA members will be involved ina variety of activities including Fundraising, Corporate/Business Partnership Development, External Communications and Marketing, and Special Project Development. Activities will include research and grant writing, corporate outreach, community networking, coordinating special projects, volunteer recruitment, and developing volunteer manuals and promotional materials. The VISTA appointments are for 1 year and are anticipated to start July 2013. Compensation is a living allowance in the amount of $891/month plus benefits which include childcare assistance if eligible , choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend, health coverage, living Allowance, transportation (in some locations , relocation allowance, and training). The position prohibits paid work outside of the sponsoring agency at any time.
