DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (AP) -- The agency that oversees the Chicago area's toll road system has launched an online feature to make it easier for people to pay unpaid tolls.

The Illinois Tollway on Monday announced it has changed the online payment method so it's easier for drivers new to the Chicago area. Features include an interactive map to help drivers track routes and calculate the amount due. They can also pay online.

Drivers have a seven-day grace period to pay tolls. According to the agency, nearly 100,000 drivers pay unpaid fees each month. Those using the grace period have increased from 2 percent in 2008 to 17 percent in 2013.

Kristi Lafleur is the Illinois Tollway executive director. She says the new process will help drivers avoid paying a toll violation penalty.
