Illinois State Police Officer Prevents Suicide Attempt

ILLINOIS (WIFR) -– A 16 year veteran of the Illinois State Police (ISP) is being credited with saving the life of a 20 year old man. On Monday, April 15, 2013, just before 4:00 p.m., ISP District 5 Trooper Kenneth Gurney was traveling on Illinois Route 59 near the Du Page River Bridge when he observed a man standing near the edge of the bridge. Trooper Gurney had just completed his shift, but stopped to check on the subject.

As Trooper Gurney approached the subject, a young lady, who identified herself as the
man's girlfriend, simultaneously arrived on scene and expressed her concern for the subject’s wellbeing. According to the woman, the troubled young man had given her reason to be concerned that he was going to end his life.

Trooper Gurney quickly recognized that the subject appeared troubled and distraught. He immediately intervened by calmly approaching the subject. Trooper Gurney’s training and experience instantly allowed him to convince the subject to reconsider his intentions. Once the subject was out of harm’s way, Trooper Gurney took him into protective custody until paramedics from the Joliet Fire Department arrived. The subject was transported to an area hospital for observation.

“Trooper Gurney’s instincts and heroic actions clearly saved the life of this distressed young man and the department commends him for his extraordinary actions,” said ISP Director Hiram Grau. “During stressful situations, the empathy expressed by our officers is equally as important as the training they have received,” added Grau.

“This is a fine example of how ISP troopers respond to critical situations and safeguard Illinois communities – both on and off duty,” said ISP District 5 Captain Bridget Bertrand. “Trooper Gurney’s actions are exemplary of the fine work our officers do, day in and day out,” added Bertrand.
