Illinois Returning to Normal After Deep Freeze

CHICAGO (AP) -- Many Illinoisans are preparing to get back to normal routines on Wednesday after two days of bone-chilling cold and messy roadways.

Chicago Public Schools officials say the nation's third-largest school district will resume classes after closing for two days because of the cold and idling 400,000 students.

But some southern Illinois school districts have called off school for another day because of hazardous driving conditions.

Temperatures are on the rise after dipping as low as 16 degrees below zero on Monday and Tuesday.

And although road crews are making progress, there is still work to do after wind caused snow drifts and icy patches over the past couple days.

The National Weather Service says temperatures in the Chicago area were expected to hover around zero overnight into Wednesday.
