SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Illinois officials are sponsoring health education and testing events on Friday to recognize National Black HIV-AIDS Awareness Day.

The Center for Minority Health Services in the Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging black residents to "get educated, get tested, get involved and get treated, if needed."

The Illinois Department of Public Health says blacks are disproportionately affected by HIV-AIDS. Blacks make up only 12 percent of the U.S. population, but account for 44 percent of the HIV-AIDS cases -- 48 percent in Illinois.

Illinois has the sixth highest number of diagnosed HIV infections in the nation and is also sixth in the estimated number of AIDS cases
